Aviation English - English for VFR Flight

Primarily for non-native English-speaking general aviation pilots who live in Europe. This course focuses on improving Aviation English communication skills needed to fly in controlled and uncontrolled airspace and to improve listening skills when presented with simulated and actual recordings from Flight Service Stations, ATIS, Clearance Delivery, Ground Control, Tower Control, as well as Approach and Departure Control.

A primary focus of the course is to improve the pilot's ability to communicate aviation concepts using maps, flight instruments, and model aeroplanes. Class activities include flight simulation role-plays, observer flights, Interactive training (JAA Compliant) and a language library. Course content involves transmission of letters, numbers, and time. Transmission techniques, words and phrases. RT Call Signs: aeronautical stations and aircraft. Establishment and Transfer of communications. Test procedures. Q Codes. Categories of Messages. Issue of Clearance and Readback. General Phraseology. Level Instruction. Flight Plans. Aerodrome Control-Aircraft. Departure Information. Taxi Instructions. Take Off Procedures. Aerodrome Traffic Circuit. Final Approach and Landing. Go Around. After Landing. Essential Aerodrome Information. Aerodrome Control - Vehicles. Movement Instructions. Crossing Runways. Vehicles Towing Aircraft. General Radar. Radar ID and Vectoring. Traffic Information and Avoiding Action. Secondary Surveillance Radar. Relevant Wx Information Terms. Aerodrome Weather. Weather Broadcast. Communication Failure. Distress and Urgency. VHF Propagation. The student will work on improving pronunciation, practising English for ATC communication for VFR departures and arrivals (CAP413). All of the above skills can be put into immediate practice by using the services and facilities of the Lydd Aero Club at Lydd Airport (EGMD). Lydd Airport is only 15 minutes from the Language Centre by car.
